Planning a Halloween party? Here are some fun and scary recipes and shortcuts, home-made and semi home-made so you can plan a monster feast without breaking your back (or the bank)!
Usually my mind is bubbling with ideas when I plan a themed party. Since everything is usually prepared at home instead of ordering from a caterer, time management is really important… So I tend to combine recipes made from scratch with some store-bought products that can be personalized with special decoration, but the criteria is always the same: every dish must be delicious!
So here’s my Halloween party ideas. If you prefer a simpler menu, check out my Easy Halloween menu post by clicking here.
Grisly Flayed Man
This is a spooky looking appetizer and easy to prepare, a real crowd pleaser! I use a simple plastic face mask and line the inside of the mask with plastic wrap. Then I add layers of parma ham directly on the lined masks, making sure the slices are overlapped. Meanwhile I prepare a recipe of cheese ball. Add the cheese on top of the parma ham slices to fill the inside of the mask to the brim. Refrigerate for at least couple of hours and Invert onto a plate, remove the plastic wrap and add the eye balls (scroll down to see “Related Products” for more ideas). Add crackers and voilà, you have a yummy and scary appetizer!
Here’s a simple cheese ball recipe – You can choose any cheese that you like, mild. medium or sharp, and add your favorite aromatics like herbs, garlic, onion, paprika etc. Since most cheeses (and crackers to serve) are already salted, I would omit adding salt to the cheese mixture.
- 2 (8 oz) pkgs. cream cheese, at room temperature
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 8 to 10 oz. shredded mixed or cheddar cheese
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp dried herbs (Italian herbs or Herbes de Provence)
- Pepper, to taste
Mix everything together with a spatula or with a hand mixer. Fill the mold and pack tightly. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to firm up. This can be prepared the day before. Since this contains dairy, unmold, remove the plastic wrap and serve immediately with your favorite crackers, and don’t let this sit out for more than 2 hours.
Salmon and Spinach puff pastry Mummies
I’m so pleased to come up with this creation, it’s really delicious and adds a macabre mummified look to the feast! Here’s my original recipe.
Charcuterie platter
This is for the squeamish guests… Put together charcuterie, cheeses and crudités and decorate with some Halloween props if you wish…
Spine Chilling Skeleton Grilled Meat
I just love this dish, it combines delicious ingredients and is ghoulish at the same time… The “rib cage” is made of spare ribs. Click here for my recipe of Vietnamese lemongrass spare ribs, or use your favorite BBQ ribs recipe. Use any type of sausages for the “entrails”… Don’t you love the red pepper “heart”? Here, I have used a flavored goat cheese log as the spine…
Eye “meat” Balls
This is another dish that you could make with your favorite meat balls recipe or store-bought meat balls.
Here I have baked the cheese balls with grated cheese and decorated with blood-shot eye balls…
Really simple recipe for maximum horror effect!
Witches Fingers
I came up with this brilliant idea to use store-bought frozen spring rolls or lumpias that are deep fried or air fried, and I attached almond slivers with a little ketchup to one end to create the bloody nails… For more information on how to make this, click here.
Creepy Desserts
No Halloween feast is complete without a sweet and scary ending… To make sure you have time to prepare everything, it’s best to combine desserts that could be made in advance (like the jellies) and store-bought desserts that will be transformed into ghoulish bites…
Skull Almond Jelly and Fruits Plate
The day before Halloween, prepare an almond gelatin with added fresh strawberries (for a bloody bruised effect) using a Skull mold (scroll down for “Related Products” information) and refrigerate it overnight. On the day of the party, unfold the jelly on a large platter, and add cut fresh fruits (pineapple, mango, grapes etc). Not only this dessert is refreshing and healthy, it can be prepared in advance and does look so spooky right?
Bloody Brain and Strawberries
The day before the party, prepare a coconut gelatin using a brain shaped mold and refrigerate it overnight.
On the day of the event, unmold the brain jelly onto a platter, decorate with strawberry purée to add a bloody effect (I love the Monin – Strawberry Purée which is Gluten-Free, Vegan, Non-GMO), garnish with fresh strawberries. You’ll have a delicious, healthy and gruesome dessert!
Haunted burial ground
This is the laziest and most effective way to create a Halloween dessert using store-bought cakes. Here I have used honey and chocolate cake, cut into squares and have decorated with candied Halloween decorations,
Eerie Cupcakes
Another dessert hack: Make your own or buy mini cupcakes and decorate with Halloween cake toppers and sprinkles. It will add a touch of devilish creativity to your desserts!
Frankenstein cake
If you have a wafer paper and edible ink printer, you can have a lot of fun printing out Ghoulish prints to decorate your cake, or you could order this Frankenstein edible print and lay it on your sheet cake, and decorate with chocolate strawberries and other berries. It will be the creepiest cake out there!
