Scotland Golf

Scotland Golf 17

Playing in Scotland, the origin of golf, is like a dream come true. I feel so blessed to be able to experience this incredible feat (thank you Cindy)…

St Andrews Links

Scotland Golf 7
St Andrews Golf Links

St Andrews Links is the home of golf. There are several courses in St Andrews: Old Course, New Course, Castle Course, Jubilee Course, Strathtyrum Course, Eden Course and Balgove course.

Needless to say, it’s extremely hard to book a tee time at the Old Course, here’s the complex procedure.  It’s an unforgettable experience. I still remember how my heart was beating so fast as I approached the first tee of the Old course, as I heard my name announced via loudspeaker.  The historical significance of the moment weighed heavily on me and I silently prayed not to mess up my first drive…

I also found the Scottish caddies a bit intimidating. They appeared not to suffer fools gladly, and somehow I feared that my game would not be up to par for this revered golf course. So I told myself to calm down and just try to do my best. It’s funny how your mind works when you are playing golf in such an august course. I also found the Scottish caddies a bit intimidating. I looked over at Guido who’s playing in another group. He was having the time of his life and had no trouble at all with his game.  After a while, I settled down and started to really enjoy the whole experience and didn’t fare too badly.

St Andrews course is said to be designed by nature. The humps and bumps in the Old Course are almost all natural, created by the wind and exposure, and sheep nestled into the hillsides to create the bunkers.

St Andrews is really the perfect place to learn never to take golf for granted. When you think you finally got it, the Old Course will throw back at you a completely different set of conditions. Each bunker is different and seems to have the ability to swallow your golf ball and each bump is a new challenge. Needless to say, on the green, each pin placement makes you feel like you lost your sense of gaging.

Nevertheless, it’s the most amazing experience and one that I will cherish for a long time.

Kingsbarn Golf Links

Kingsbarns Golf Links is just a short 15 minutes drive from St Andrews. It’s a young course, around 10 years old, but is really stunning, ranking 13th in “World’s Top 100 Golf Courses” by Golfscape.com 2020.

It runs along 1.8 miles of North Sea coastline, where each hole embraces the sea. It’s an amazing traditional Scottish links golf course.

The course was just incredible From the driving range, the course itself, the Clubhouse to the locker room, everything was exceptional!

The 6th hole is a par 4, and with the green set below the tee, and offers an amazing view of the whole golf course.

The coastline view is breathtaking! On top, the whole atmosphere at the Clubhouse is relaxed with really friendly staff.

This is truly one of the most beautiful golf courses that we have ever played and absolutely a must-stop during a Scottish golf trip!

Turnberry Golf Course

Turnberry has been voted the best golf course in Europe.

Located near Blacklick Creek, Turnberry Golf Course has  a links-style championship layout. Designed by Arthur Hills this lengthy 6,700 yards golf course tumbles across up and down elevations.

The front nine is more wooded but there is more water coming into play on the back nine. The course is dotted with challenging bunkers and on each hole, we face a tricky short game approaching the small, elevated greens.

The most iconic landmark is the Turnberry Lighthouse at 24 metres high, with 76 steps to the top, which has marked this coastline since 1873.

A Scottish Dinner

Scotland Golf 3
Bagpiper – A tradition

The Scottish national dish, Haggis, is an acquired taste. It’s a type of pudding composed of the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep (or other animal), minced and mixed with beef or mutton suet and oatmeal and seasoned with onion, cayenne pepper, and other spices. The mixture is packed into a sheep’s stomach and boiled.

A Scottish welcome

Luckily, Scotland offers a wide range of delicious dishes aside from Haggis. We have enjoyed exceptional food during our stay in Scotland, and this dinner menu stands out: Ceviche of fresh seafood with lemon vinaigrette, Seared Pork Belly and Scallops with vegetable and Fresh Berries with Coconut Ice Cream…
