The New Orleans Food Tour has left us wanting to find out more about the local food scene, and we are out and about searching for our favorite food during our brief stay.
New Orleans Tradition, Mothers
Somebody has recommended the New Orleans Tradition since 1938, Mothers which claims to make the Best Baked Ham in the World. The ambiance is more like a cafeteria, with no reservation.
We order their most famous dishes, the Baked Ham platter of course, Jerry’s Jambalaya and Seafood Gumbo. Maybe due to the hype, our expectations are high and we are disappointed by the meal. It lacks in flavor and feels very heavy.
Bourbon Street
After dinner, we walk around Bourbon street area, which is like party town…
Pubs and jazz clubs open until late, and street performers play till the wee hours. But you can be entertained just by walking around and observing people, the spectacle is right in the street.
Lunch on Magazine Street
The next day, after a morning tour, we decide to try the famous New Orleans sandwiches at Stein Market and Deli.
Every morsel of each sandwich is a delight, we especially love the Stein’s version of muffuletta and the Po’Boy sandwich.
For dessert, we walk a few doors down to District Donuts. This place makes everything from scratch, down to the sprinkles and uses all natural ingredients wherever possible. There are 100 donuts options with six rotating donuts every week.
Of course, we can’t resist and try the Blueberry Cheesecake and Maple Glaze flavors.
We head back to the French Quarter to walk off our meal.
Cafe du Monde
In the afternoon, we need some caffeine and it’s a perfect excuse to go to the world famous Cafe du Monde. Established since 1862 and open every day except on Christmas day, it’s a traditional coffee shop famous for its Coffee Chicory blend and its airily light and crispy Beignets which are French-style square doughnuts. You can spot this place from afar as there’s always a long tine in front…
World Famous Willie Mae’s Fried Chicken
Where to go for dinner is very important as it’s now our last day in NOLA. After reading amazing reviews about Willie Mae’s Scotch House, with people flying in from all over the world to taste its food, the decision is made.
This is my absolute favorite meal in New Orleans! Willie Mae’s Scotch House was established in 1957 with a bar, a barbershop and beauty salon in the front. Willie Mae invented a signature cocktail made from milk and whisky, hence the “Scotch House” name. She used to serve to the bar customers the delicious food that she cooked for her family. After the beauty salon closed in the 70s, the bar customers requested for a restaurant, and Willie Mae complied and offered delicious Mississippi and Louisiana cuisines. In 2005, Ms. Willie Mae Seaton, age 91, was honored with the prestigious James Beard Award for “America’s Classic Restaurant for the Southern Region.”
Due to its popularity, be ready to line up for a long long time…
When we get there in the afternoon, there is already a very long line…
After over an hour’s wait, we can enter the restaurant…
Finally we are seated and place our order.
Some of us ordered fried catfish
or fried white meat with corn and peas
Most of us pick the fried chicken dark meat and sweet potato fries
My deep fried and wonderfully seasoned chicken is really finger licking succulent, with a yummy crispy crust. No wonder Willie Mae Scotch House has won recognition from the Food Network and the Travel Channel as “America’s Best Fried Chicken.”
When you’re in New Orleans, don’t miss this wonderful eatery which also counts among its patrons President Obama and first lady Laura Bush.
