Food Tour in Tuscany
When you travel with a group of friends, it’s tricky to find consensus on tours as we all have different interests and tastes. Luckily our friends are pretty easy going and we all agreed to do a basic Siena food tour. Viator offers many types of Siena food tour and walking tours to select from.
Piazza del Campo
We meet our tour guide at the Piazza del Campo, the main town square, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s where the famous horserace Palio is held to follow the medical tradition, with bareback riders racing on cobblestones, so it’s pretty thrilling to watch…
Truffles!
The first stop is a specialized truffle shop. Truffles grow plentiful in his Tuscany region. The White truffle, Bianco is typical of winter; then in March there’s the Bianchetto and later in the year, there’s the Black one, called Nero Liscio and the Scorzone. So you can book a truffle hunting expedition all year round. This time, we have to content ourselves with some truffle tasting… The fragrance is strong and distinctive and makes me dream of all the dishes that I could make with just a pinch of high quality truffle! This is a promising start to our food tour…
Focaccia
The next stop is a traditional Italian bakery which also sells condiments and cold cuts
Some of us have a bite of the freshly baked focaccia…

Fresh Pici
The next Siena food tour stop is a small tavern and we have a sampling of Pici allo Zafferano & Salsiccia or fresh pasta from Tuscany with saffron and local sausage.
Panforte
Our food tour ends at Casa Toscana, a gourmet store selling authentic local delicacies and wines
Vin Santo
We sip Vin Santo or “holy wine”, which is a dessert wine from the Tuscany region. Vin Santo wines are often made from white grape varieties which may also be used to produce a rosé style known as “Occhio di Pernice” or Eye of the Partridge
It’s an interesting food tour to discover the quaint old town of Siena, but we are left hungry as the sampling portions are tiny. Check out our Tuscany wine tasting post!
